Chapter 18

Mac had called the Palisades and spoken to the Blakes, but they had neither seen nor heard from William Toons since the murder mystery weekend. He had also called Fliss Cameron, but she had told him the same. She had no idea where William Toons might be staying, either. She had assumed he had either returned to London or even left the country. He asked both the Blakes and Fliss to let him know if Toons did turn up and left the message that Mac would like to speak to him.

“Andy, can you ring round to local hotels, see if our man is staying at any of them?” He thought about contacting DI Kendall, then decided it could wait until he had something definite to tell him.

Mac had then gone to see what on earth Rina was on about.

Rina seemed unusually excited — and also unusually annoyed, Mac thought. She told him about Toons’s visit, and then sat Mac down in her little sitting room. Matthew laid his phone on the table between them, switched to play.

Mac listened with increasing astonishment as the conversation unfolded.

“You do know this was technically illegal,” he said, when the recording had finished. “You didn’t have his permission to record the conversation.”

“Good thing I took notes immediately after he’d gone, then,” Rina said, and set a sheaf of papers beside the phone.

“And, of course, I couldn’t help but overhear,” Matthew added. “But my guess is he’ll already be regretting this conversation. He asked Rina to wait until tomorrow until contacting you. He knew that she would have to speak to you, of course, but she was supposed to wait and then go with him in the morning. Rina — quite sensibly, I feel — decided that you needed to be informed straight away.”

“I feel sorry for the man, he’s obviously been through the mill, but I’d also feel like an accomplice if I didn’t speak up now. All of this mess has gone on for long enough.”

Mac raised an eyebrow. In the past, Rina had certainly delayed passing on information when she thought that was the right course of action, but evidently she felt that loyalty to Mac certainly trumped any interest of William Toons on this occasion.

“At least you now have a name for the dead man.” Matthew said.

“That’s certainly welcome,” Mac admitted. “Always supposing Toons was telling the truth about that. And he seems to be suggesting that our man might have aliases.”

“And you can perhaps let the family know what happened to Genevieve Atkins. I did a quick internet search and what he told me does seem to check out.”

Mac nodded. “You have no idea where he was going?”

Rina shook her head. “As you heard, he said he had people to speak to. Others that were involved. I thought he might go straight to see Fliss, but obviously I was wrong. So, my guess is he’ll have gone to speak with this Derek he mentioned.”

“Derek what?” Mac wondered. “He seems to have regretted, or maybe even forgotten, mentioning him by name.
